Scaling in Oil Wells and Pipelines

Combating mineral scale deposits in wells and pipelines to maintain flow capacity.

Scale deposits form when mineral-rich produced water encounters changes in temperature and pressure during production. Common scale types include calcium carbonate, barium sulfate, and calcium sulfate, all of which can severely restrict flow in wells and pipelines.

In this case, an oil field was experiencing progressive scaling in both production wells and surface flow lines. Traditional scale inhibitor squeeze treatments were effective but expensive, requiring regular reapplication.

Merus Rings were installed on the affected wells and flow lines. The oscillation technology prevented new scale formation and gradually dissolved existing deposits, restoring flow capacity without mechanical intervention.
