Improving crude oil pour point to enable flow in cold temperature environments.
Pour point is the temperature below which crude oil ceases to flow. High pour point crude oils present significant challenges in cold weather operations, pipeline restarts, and storage facility management.
An operator in a cold climate region was experiencing frequent flow assurance issues related to high pour point crude. Pipeline shutdowns during cold weather required extended restart procedures and significant energy input.
Merus technology was applied to lower the effective pour point of the crude oil. The oscillation treatment modified the crystallization behavior of the wax components, allowing the oil to flow at lower temperatures than its natural pour point.
